Tipsy Tuna Toss

The Tipsy Tuna Toss is another event that was a major hit at Placencia Lobsterfest 2006 but never happened in 2007. This year there were plenty of people who decided to "Toss the Tuna".

Imagine this - This tuna weighs close to 35 lbs and the object of this contest is to toss it as far as you can.... after you've turned around several times. You can not use the tail or the fins as handles to give you a better grip. You have to hug and squeeze this tuna like it's your boyfriend or girlfriend, husband or wife and then on your final spin you toss it as far as possible. Everyone gets three chances to throw..... farthest throw wins.

The guys were first and slow to sign up but once they got the picture we ended up with 12 guys ready to show their stuff. Each person had their own "method" of throwing -

This was a throw that went far but not quite far enough. The winning throw was a 25ft toss by Danny from the States. People had to scramble out of the way to avoid being squished by the flying 35 lb Tuna. Second place went to Anwar from Belmopan with a 23 plus ft throw.

If the guys threw far the ladies made up for distance with their entertaining antics and method.

"Little Bit" the dancing diva........ farthest throw was about 3 ft.

The first and second place in both the men & women's categories won $50 & $25 respectively and Tipsy Tuna Sports Bar t-shirts!

The Tipsy Tuna Toss was a BLAST!!!!! Can't wait to have it again at Placencia Lobsterfest 2009 - June 26th, 27th & 28th!!!

Who makes it happen?

Placencia Lobsterfest has grown over the years and really takes a lot of hard work and great planning to pull off. The Placencia Village Council & the Placencia Tourism Center/PBTIA are the main coordinators of the weekend. We start planning in January believe it or not.

The BTIA booth at Placencia Lobsterfest where the Lobsterfest shirts can be found and the raffle tickets for the Placencia BTIA raffle. Felisha worked all weekend long and had the help of Shieba from the Toledo BTIA office. Thanks Sheiba!

This is the drink ticket area at the Placencia Village Council bar - Phillipa & Graham worked long hours that weekend.

Cleve, from the PTC, looks relaxed but this picture caught him at the only moment he sat down that weekend. He made the long trip to the Kendal Bridge (or rather lack of bridge area) on Saturday to make sure the New Creation Band who had played Friday night got back across to the north side and Gilharry 7 made it across to the south side so they could perform Saturday & Sunday. Cleve also found the man that was heading to Placencia with the fireworks for Saturday night and brought him back.

This is the Love FM crew (minus 1 person) They come down every year to broadcast from Lobsterfest so that those throughout the country who could not make it still can feel a part of it. Usually they drive down but with the bridge out this year they FLEW in from Belize City! Now that is dedication!

Brian, village council chairman, was being interviewed by Love FM telling people all about our great festival! He started off the weekend by taking part in the 5 mile "Battle Cancer Walk" from Seine Bight Village Friday morning!

Salva, Ellie & Mr. Jack made sure the fishing tournament ran smoothly this year. Mr Jack got up each morning to check the boats before they left at 5 am!!!! That's early!

PBTIA Chairperson Bev spent several hours manning the BTIA booth along with Felisha. I think she is about to put some lucky tickets into the raffle barrel.

Dave (our tug o war official) is part of the PBTIA. He helped out throughout the weekend with different events like the Tuna Toss, the kayak race & the fishing tournament - generally whatever needed to be done. He also revamped the raffle barrel & BTIA counter front so that both were in tip top shape for the weekend.

The bartenders kept the crowds at the bar happy and well hydrated!

Perfecto, on the four-wheeler, ran ice, drinks, band equipment etc ALL weekend long. He was a round the clock trooper.

DJs kept the music and announcements coming all weekend long. Thanks guys.

There are others on the Lobsterfest Crew whose pictures have not been turned in yet but will be posted soon!!!! These include Ms. Karen, Harald, Lloydia, Doc, Jodie, Ilsa & Tanya. Also missing was Gillian, who helped big time getting the preparations for the raffle together starting as far back as January but is now off having her baby. :) Congrats Gill & Salva!

Join us next year for Placencia Lobsterfest 2009 - June 26th, 27th & 28th!!!!

Not to be out done by the grown ups

Right after the adults had their tug o war competition two teams of youngster asked if they could compete. This spur of the moment match turned out to be the most exciting of the day and drew the largest crowd of all. These kids were evenly matched and the spectators went wild hollering in support.

In the end this was the team that won the $25 that the Tipsy Tuna Sports Bar gave for the match.

I hear they are training for next year's Placencia Lobsterfest as well!

The Fishing Tournament

The Placencia Fishermen's Day Saltwater Fishing Tournament takes place the Saturday & Sunday of Placencia Lobsterfest. This year the winds were blowing and the seas were especially rough and only nine courageous captains & crews registered to compete.

Weigh in happens at 5:30 pm on Saturday and 3:30 pm on Sunday down at the Placencia Fishermen's Cooperative main dock. This year's officials were Salva Zabaneh, Carlton "Jack" Young, & Andrew Godoy.

The tournament always has great sponsors - this year the sponsors included Shell Placencia, Belize Bank, Insurance Corporation of Belize, Tipsy Tuna Sports Bar, Marelco & Yamaha, Barefoot Beach Bar & The Secret Garden. Others that sponsored can be seen on the Placencia Lobsterfest T-shirt.

This is the scale that has been used in the past for the tournament.

This year a digital scale was used for the weigh in.

The catches were not as big as previous years but a few of the fish that did come in were real WHOPPERS!

A barracuda from the "Teresa G"

Dorado from the "Coulton's Reef"

A barracuda and the largest fish caught by a woman

A wahoo - "Coulton's Reef"

The crew of the Olivia V

Of course it is Lobsterfest so there has to be lobster - this was the largest one caught!

LoveFM never missed a beat! They reported all weekend on everything that Placencia Lobsterfest had to offer.

In the end this fishing tournament judge's shirt says it all...........

Join us for next year's tournament - June 27th & 28th!

Tug O War!!!!

In 2006 Placencia Lobsterfest introduced the Tug O War Tournament. That year the tournament sponsor was the Pickled Parrot. The teams were made up of 5 people (1 had to be a lady). I think entering into it none of the participants realized just how difficult Tug O War can be. I was on a team - we only made one match - we got our butts kicked - we were all extremely sore for weeks......

In 2007 I think the memory of the pain that followed was still felt and Tug O War did not take place BUT in 2008 teams came out rip roaring and ready to go.......

This year Yearwood Properties put up a $250 cash prize for first ($150) and second place ($100), DeTatch Seafood Cafe offered up a case of Belize's favorite beer - Belikin and then Bowen and Bowen offered up a second case. The Lobsterfest committee circulated emails before the weekend of the fest to encourage businesses to enter teams.......

The Moorings Belize entered a team. Everyone was in their Moorings shirts, they even had their coach in uniform. This year one change to the rules was the increase of women on the team - now a minimum of two.
The other team was one literally grabbed out of the crowd. The two younger fellows Travis & Aaron in the front just wanted to compete and found Marge (in blue) and Janelle & Warren who I think were all pretty unaware of the torture they were about to endure. :)

Oh how they tried........

They pulled and they pulled......

And they pulled and they pulled......

In the end of that round the Moorings were the winners.

The Moorings took on another team.

Doesn't it look easy?

Well maybe not that easy....

But fun..... See that smile on her face?!
Tug O War official Dave Vernon laughed his way through the whole competition.

In the end the Moorings and another team had such a close finish that the Placencia BTIA threw in an extra $50 to the prize so that both team won $150 and a case of beer each. The entertainment value alone was worth it!

I am also pleased to report that the pain from 2008 was limited to my fingers and a dull ache in my arms in the days that followed, not the "Oh My Gosh I might just die" feeling of 2006. Our team is training for the Tug O War tourny at Placencia Lobsterfest 2009 - June 26, 27 & 28...... You better start training yours now..........

Placencia Lobsterfest Booths....

Food was not the only thing available at this year's Placencia Lobsterfest. Usually vendors come from all over the country to sell their wares. With the Kendal Causeway out (the temporary one is back in place now BTW - it washed out right in time to make organizing the fest a real challenge and was back in place by Monday morning) many of the usual vendors were unable to make it.

Some of the ones that did make it where......

Every year the Placencia BTIA, one of the festival's main coordinators, has a booth where they sell that year's Lobsterfest T-shirts, other Lobsterfest merchandise and the tickets for the Placencia BTIA Lobsterfest Raffle. This raffle is one of the most popular parts of the fest and this year there were more than 80 prizes to be won. We'll post the list later - the prizes this year were great and for the first time ever ALL the tickets sold!!!!

The set up this year really helped the crowd to flow.......

Wood Carvings can always be found at Placencia Lobsterfest. These beautiful hand carved items add to anyones art collection! Each year one carving is chosen as the Best Boat trophy for the winner of the Placencia Lobstefest Fishermen's Day Saltwater Fishing Tournament.

The Placencia Mooring Masters had a booth to help raise awareness about their reef protection project. They gave information, sold their wristbands, and had a bake sale.

Friends of Nature, the NGO in the area that manages several protected areas, had a booth to educate the public on their role in the community.

The Joint Boutique..... Coming Soon? They made their debut at this year's Lobsterfest. Last I heard they're still looking for a storefront for their grand opening later this year. Cool clothes....

The Placencia BTIA/Placencia Tourism Center shared this tent with the St. John's PTA. St. John's, Placencia's primary school, ran the soft drink and water sales for the fest this year. The PTA is trying to do a major school expansion and right now every penny counts.

Placencia Lobsterfest 2008 is a rousing success despite all odds

PLACENCIA LOBSTERFEST 2008 IS
A ROUSING SUCCESS DESPITE ALL ODDS

30 June, 2008: Placencia Lobsterfest 2008, an annual fund-raiser event co-sponsored by the Placencia Chapter BTIA and the Placencia Village Council, completed its 3-day weekend with a record turnout despite rain, wind, and a washed out (again!) Kendal Bridge on the Southern Highway that challenged the event coordinators to find a way to get the participants from Belize City, Corozol and San Ignacio down to Placencia in time for their presentations.

Two major bands, the New Creation Band and the Gilharry 7 Band showed their mettle when they and their truckloads of equipment had to be ferried across the Kendal River and back again in 25’ fishing skiffs, taking a total of 11 round-trips across the swift-moving river. The Placencia crowd showed their appreciation with full participation in all planned activities, including three nights of dancing until the wee hours, a two-day fishing tournament with over $8,000 in prizes, and the country’s largest raffle with over 80 donated prizes.

Opening Ceremonies included remarks by Minister and Area Representative Melvin Hulse, Minister “Boots” Martinez, and Cadet Henderson. The Belize National Anthem was sung by visiting guest Lila Vernon.

Winners of the Fishing Tournament include “Coulton’s Reef” captained by Alfred Williams, who was awarded the Best Boat of the tournament with 140.5 points and awarded $2500 cash and 20 gallons of fuel from Shell Placencia as well as the prizes for the Highest Scoring Extraordinary Fish a 28# 2oz Wahoo as well as the Heaviest Fish of the Tournament given by Marelco & Yamaha. Other prize winners include the “Leonora” with the Largest Barracuda and Barefoot Beach Bar’s Ladies Luck prize for Heaviest Fish Caught by a Woman for their 19 # 8 oz barracuda, the “Nia” with the Largest Kingfish weighing in at 10 #.

The grand prize Raffle winner was local resident Mary Rudon. Ms. Rudon won a day sail for 6 people courtesy of The Moorings Belize Ltd – w/ $100 Gift Certificate to Wallen’s Market, $100 Cash Prize from Joy Tours, $100 Cash Prize from Ocean’s Edge, & Ray’s case of Beer.

Other activities included a Children’s Olympics sponsored by Reagan International and the Peninsula Club of Belize, Kids Games organized by Progressive Youths of Placencia, the First Annual Lobster Cook-Off sponsored by Wallen’s Market and Hokey Pokey Water Taxi, the Tipsy Tuna Toss sponsored by Tipsy Tuna Sports Bar, Kayak Race sponsored by the Driftwood Bar and Seaspray Hotel, a Tug-o-War Tournament sponsored by Yearwood Properties, De’Tach Seafood Bar & Grill and Bowen & Bowen, a Rubber Ducky Race, Saturday night fireworks and Sunday afternoon music by Placencia’s very own Inner Vibrations. Love-FM broadcasted live all three days of the event.

Placencia BTIA and Placencia Village Council give a Big Up to all participants, sponsors and guests, and will donate a portion of the funds raised to the victims of the tragic flooding in the Stann Creek District last month.
